About Birds
Birds are beautiful and graceful creatures. Not only do birds satisfy our aesthetic sense through their handsome plumage and their sweet voices, but they are marvelously adapted to their respective fields of activity. They are a valuable asset because they depend largely for their food on insects which are injurious to plant life.
No other creatures are so well fitted to capture flying insects as swallows, swifts, and night hawks. The wrens, trim of body and agile of movement, creep in and out of the holes and crevices and explore rubbish heaps for hidden insects. The woodpecker, whose whole body exhibits wonderful adaptation of means to end, is provided with strong claws for holding firmly when at work, a chisel-like bill driven by powerful muscles to dig out insects and drag forth the concealed larvae safe from other foes.
There are other birds who don't eat insects and feed mainly on seeds, fruits and berries. They are often responsible for scattering seeds of the berries and fruits. Helping in that way of starting new plants for them to feed on.
The game birds furnish sport for great numbers of people who love to go afield with dog and gun. Certain kinds of game birds such as quail, pheasants and ducks are raised in considerable numbers on preserves and on farms because of their value for commercial purposes.
There are also the domestic birds. Chickens and domestic turkey are two of the domestic birds. They provide us with sources of food with their eggs and themselves.
Many species of birds are territorial as they will stay in one area year around. Many more species tend to migrate spending the winter months in warmer climates and the summer months up farther north. Watching the geese fly south in the northeast is a sign of winter coming. Pheasants in the fields and Turkey in the woods are welcome sight's year round.
Birds have also been pets ever since man realized they could be fed and cared for and in return would give a beautiful song or beautiful site. Canaries, Parrots, Parakeets, to name just a few have all made wonderful pets. From the plain to the extreme it seems that man has tried to tame them all. Falcons have been used for hunting by man for centuries and Peacocks have graced more then one palace in ancient times.
